Region 1 on old tellys

I seem to be having problems playing region 1`s on my tv. The tv is maybe 5 years old and seems to be Pal only. When I play R1`s on my Toshiba 220E the picture scrolls rapidly (as if the horizontal hold has gone), but the sound is ok, so I know that the dvd player recognises it as a valid disk. Is there some way that newer tv`s are both pal / ntsc? Is there any way of syncing the picture, maybe via my video? This all connected via scart.

Or should I just buy a new funky sooper dooper widescreen tv...?

this is because youre tv is not ntsc or pal 60hz compatable if the tv has a v-hold button you could try changing the v-hold

One other thing you might like to try: Scart plugs and sockets may make life simple but their connections are often of a poor quality. You may have lovely alloy bodied plugs on your scart lead but the sockets found on most DVD players and TVs are usually dire.

Try unplugging and then re-connecting the scart lead as firmly and securely as possible. Often you get scrolling when the scart pins aren`t getting a good enough contact. I have this problem with a 12 year-old Sony set which I use as a stand-by. It just needs a little tweak to the scart plug/socket to work perfectly.

If you get no joy, then it`s probably a case of your TV being PAL only...

I have my DVD player connected to AV1 (RGB) and Sky to AV2. If I turn Sky on whilst I`m watching a DVD, the picture from the DVD player behaves as you have described ie. problem with vertical hold. If I have Sky on first and then turn my DVD player on, the TV automatically flicks to AV1 and the picture is fine. Hope you can follow my description!!
