Difficult subject, as no one knows which format will become industry standard. From experience, I have a Panasonic DVD recorder (DVD-Ram & DVD-R) I test recorded on a DVD-R disc and got friends and family to try it in their machines, where it worked 100%. So compatiblity looks good and the media is dirt cheap.

I also have the Philips, it is reported that compatibility is even better but I
bothered testing because DVD+R is still rather expensive.

Hope this helps

"Difficult subject, as no one knows which format will become industry standard."

DVD-R is already a very well established industry standard - it`s been around for about 4 years, though it`s only recently that it`s become cheap enough for normal folk like us to buy. DVD+R is the Johnny-come-lately format, and only seems to exist at all because Philips are such awkward buggers and like to do their own thing. (Remember the Video 2000 system? ;-) )

DVD-R discs are widely available and cheap. SVP (http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk) is a good starting point, though I`d steer clear of the very cheapest discs.
