cheap amps from Richer Sounds

atc1344 (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 26th September 2002, 17:10

Any advice please on the following 2 amps from Richer Sounds.

Aiwa AVNW30 new for £119.99 or a Sherwood RDV8090RDS graded for £99.99. Both have Dolby digital and DTS, the Sherwood 100 watts per channel and the Aiwa 50.

Both look very good for the price but I`ve seen the earlier reviews for Sherwood amps stating that music reproduction is not too good. That doesn`t bother me as I`m looking for my first surround set up but are there any other concerns. Can`t find much info on here for Aiwa amps.

Which one is the best to go for?

Diolch

Sherwood make good amps. I`ve got the RD-6106R receiver amp, DTS & Dolby Digital. Celestion speakers in the front, Eltax at the back. Good bass.

I have an Aiwa surround sound amp (bought as a birthday present) and I`d agree that the bass seems a bit limited. The speakers I`m using are old, but go down to sub-woofer frequencies: the old music centre they came with (which I bought for the radio version of Lord of the Rings) certainly puts out more bass.

Were you using a sub-woofer with the Aiwa amps you tried? A lot of current hi-fi seems to expect you to use one, if speaker-size is any guide.
