Page 1 of biwiring tannoy speakers + `normal` amp = ???

just picked up a lovely secondhand set of tannoy speakers with biwiring.
at the moment (waits til money and upgrade....) i`ll be putting them through a bog standard stero amp without biwiring facilities

what`s the best way to set it up?
on the speakers there`s a `plug` which slides down for normal wiring (so both the negatives and both the positives are linked together) but when i wire it up as i would have thought was normal the sound is muffled (too much bass)

and i`m hurting even more now from writing this!

any ideas?

Well you have possibly two options,if your amp has speaker A & speaker B connections,leave the bar up,tighten the terminals up & then wire the HF (Treble) on each speaker to the speaker A connections on amp,& the LF(Bass) to speaker B connections on amp!
Otherwise leave bar down & connect just 1 red & 1 black on each speaker to the amp.
If you still have to much bass check to see if the treble units are working,or remove the foam bung from either the front or rear of each speaker.
If they are Tannoys dual concentric model the treble is mounted inside the bass unit.

i`m using just a very basic amp (no A&B)

i was doing as you said with leaving the bar down but there`s still too much bass :(

i wired the amp into just the HF to test and they`re working. no foam bungs to be found either

would impedance play a role in any of this? (showing my brains here...)

the back of my amp says "speakers 8~16"

Just a thought as i dont know those speakers,,,,are they to be positioned close to the wall or,, AWAY from it???
Are they close to the corners of the room?? These all have an effect on the Bass sound.
As far as the Impedance goes,,,,i`d presume that that is not the problem,,,because they would have either
A: have blown OR,,,
B: your output would be low from not driving them with enough juice.

Check the Impedance of your speakers,as long as they say 8 OR 16 ohms then they are ok,,,,presuming that the original units inside have not been replaced with INCORRECT impedance units.
One last thing,,,,if the speakers are old as in 10yrs and there are Electrolytic caps anywhere inside the speakers i`d suggest changing those personally,,,,The reason being is that,,, the electrolyte dries out and increases bass response. Dont know if this helps.

Did you hear them in action before buying? I presume they sounded OK then? How were they set up there - as they have a reflex port, it`s likely that they should be away from the walls, and certainly away from corners, as Rob2 suggests. Putting them on speaker stands may tighten the bass.
Generally a foam bung is used to reduce the bass response when a ported speaker is placed close to the wall - certainly that`s how my Mission M71s work.

Can`t think of much more to suggest, really.... You`ve checked any tone controls on the amp, I presume?
