Philips DVDR880 questions

Bowf (Elite) posted this on Friday, 1st November 2002, 13:08

Simple enough questions I need answered really.
I`m doing away with my VHS as my new TV has only 2 shelves ( SKY digibox and DVD player ).But I would still like to be able to record, so I`m thinking of selling my Pioneer 444 to a mate and using a Philips 880 instead, effectively killing 2 birds with one stone.
1/ Is the Philips picture and sound as good as the 444 ?
2/ Is it able to output an S-VHS signal down a scart, like the 444 ?
3/ Is the recordeable bit as versatile as a videotape ? i.e.can you effectively leave the same recordeable dvd in the player and record and playback programmes over and over again ?
Cheers for any info.

1) Yes
2) Yes
3) If we`re talking about +RW`s, then Yes.

In actual fact it works EXACTLY like a VCR with +RW media. For example, when you erase an early portion of a full disc (say a 30 min block), the remaining data stays at the back-end of the disc. So, if you wanted to add more material to it, you`d have to write to the `empty` part (and if it ran for longer than 30 mins you`d start recording over the later stuff). You can use Videoplus/Timer Record in the same way you do with a regular video too (although with +R/RW you get each programme in a different title accompanied by a nice thumbnail!)..

How many times can you ree use a DVD+RW? Is it something ridiculous like 1000 times?

The copy protection is a big blow for me. I wanted to transfer my VHJS copies of Aladdin and Lion King onto DVD+R but no joy ;-(
