VHS question.............

allmyusernamesweretaken (Competent) posted this on Monday, 16th December 2002, 17:56

Sorry if this is a gormless question, but can anyone tell me the difference between VHS, S-VHS & S-VHS-ET, Is it true you need special tapes for S-VHS ?

I`d be grateful for any explanations.

Thanks :)

SVHS - Yes you need special tapes which can be about £5 each for 3 hour.
SVHS -ET (Extra Technology) gives near SVHS quality on normal VHS tapes
VHS at best with give you 250 lines of resolution and SVHS about 400 with DVD/DV about 500 to give you an idea of quality.

You can get a JVC SVHS-ET model now for about £120 last time I looked. Proberbly get one myself next as DVD recorders are still too much for me!

We have a JVC S-VHS-ET machine. We never use the ET facility - I`m afraid is doesn`t do what is say`s on the tin! Save up and get a DVDR - although I have no doubt that they`ll be down to £250 in 18 months, maybe less.

Have you tried different makes of VHS tapes when recording in ET mode? The review I read said it needed good quality tapes.

Cheers, I`ve just ordered a Panasonic s-vhs/et, fingers crossed that it does what it says on the tin.

I wonder what happened to the man who ordered the last sailing ship?

Yeah, Yeah, but I`ve got an archive of about 250 taped videos and can`t afford the DVD writer. Plus in 12mths they`ll be loads cheaper, probably half the size and all the same format.

Not all of us want to fly anyway ;)

£152.96 (free delivery).Got it today, looks gorgeous, nice mirror front to match my Philips DVD, (how shallow am I?). Very easy to set up. Need to get some new tapes as mine are pretty sh*gged, will let you know how it tapes when I do. I`m also watching on a 14" after my 28" was nicked, so I won`t get a true idea of the quality, till my new TV comes.

QED is Miller Bros. so they`re fairly reputable. I ordered on Weds and it arrived this morn (Fri), unfortunatley the TV that was supposed to arrive with it, has been delayed till after Xmas :(

BTW , empiredirect have the same vhs for £145.12, but they wanted to charge £7.99 for delivery (which considering they are in Leeds and I`m in Doncaster was a bit steep)- making it dearer than QED.
