how to improve audio

cirdan (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 29th December 2002, 03:11

i just got a dvd player, yes for xmas. i have it connected to tv via scart, is this the best way to do it? and i noticed that the sound needed to be turned up quite a bit. when turned up the music or effects and background noise seem ok but at times the dialogue was hard to pick up, especially on lord of the rings, even after several viewings there are bits i cant quite make out. i just wanted to now if this is how dvds are and if there is anything else i need to appreciate the whole dvd experience.
hope you can help!

Sounds like your scart lead is buggered, buy a new one but try not to scrimp on it. If possible go to your local specialist & but a make like Ixos but it will set you back around £30.00 either that or your scart connection in your TV is buggered

thanks for that. i watched a few more dvds today and they seem ok, is it just the lord of the rings one that does that. it isnt throughout the film, it just seems that in several parts the dialogue seems a little muffled, or the sound effects a touch too loud. i watched monsters inc before and there seemed to be a good balance between the music/sound effects and the dialogue. my scart lead is a goodish one, it cost £20 earlier this year. so thats why i was wondering wether the film had been done wrong.
would a surround system be better, or is there any other way of setting it up instead of through the telly. any advice here would be most welcome.

This is a guess, but most region 2 (english) dvd`s come with Dolby digital stereo and dolby digital 5.1.If your using a tv with two speakers make sure you got your audio settings on the dvd to dolby stereo.

If you listen to a dolby 5.1 sound track through two speaker it gets mixed down and this can lead to the uneven sound problems you describe.

For best results you realy need a 5.1 set up,then your lord of the rings will probably blow you away, then your be hooked like the rest of us.

In my opinion the best low cost option is the VideoLogic DigiTheatre,at around £248 but always hunt around.I`ve put a link at the bottom of this page for there web site.

Then theres DTS audio but i would suggest reading some home cinema mags to get the idea.

Hope this helps.

many thanks for the help. the audio has never been a major problem, infact most films are good, well as good as a tv can offer. but i have been reading about surround sound and checked the odd forum and feel i am missing out on the point of dvd, yes the picture is great no problem, but the sound never quite felt right. apparently their is a bit of a problem with the soundtrack on region 2 fellowship dvd, but im sure a better sound output would help.
i only have a small room but still feel the surround system might help, you suggested the £248 setup. would i notice any difference in a £100ish system? or is that too cheap, i now people say get what you can afford but i shelled out for a new dvd player at xmas so its either get a reasonably priced system or save up for several months!
well, all the best and a happy new year!!!!!!!!
