Teletext - S-VHS??

MicoMan (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 8th February 2003, 23:14

I know that an S-VHS video recorder will record the teletext so you can get subtitles on play back.

Does the subtitles have to be on all the time with the recording?

Does this work in ET mode with the VCR`s from JVC/Panasonic?

Does this all work or are there problems?

I checked my Panasonic 830, and have to say i was pretty disappointed. Letters were missing just like when you have poor reception.

Seems to vary from model to model. I had a Ferguson VCR about 15 years ago which recorded the Teletext signal almost perfectly - and this was just a standard VHS deck, not S-VHS.

The Panasonic 830 was one I was considering. Did you test it with SVHS tapes? or was it with VHS in ET? Does it work with both?
Was it just with bad reception? Did it work properly at all?

My TV reception is very good here so I may get better results?

Has anyone else got a Panny or the JVC one they can test for me?

Thanks

Sorry for the lateness of my reply (i haven`t visited this forum since i last posted). I tried both SVHS tapes and VHS in ET mode, and although SVHS was very slightly better, neither were good enough. Although i use an indoor aerial, i get a very good signal here (close to Crystal Palace transmitter), i was just commenting that the effect on the recording, was similar to what you would get with poor reception. When i watch subtitles/Teletext direct off air, there are no such problems.
I`ll see if i can find the manual, incase i`m doing something wrong, and have another bash!

Hi Micoman, I`ve been meaning to check this for you, but haven`t had a minute to play around untill now.

I`ve got a panasonic nv-hs830b and i`ve tried out the subtitle thing...and yes, you can get subtitles on playback.

- when I taped in svhs - et mode on vhs tape, or svhs mode on svhs tape then you can get subtitles on playback, you don`t have to have subtitles selected whilst you are taping, but on playback you need to press subtitles on your tv remote. The subtitles are as clear as normal.

- when I taped vhs on vhs and pressed for subtitles on playback, I just got the subtitle logo in the corner of the screen and nothing else.

I`m wondering if maybe your tv has something to do with this as my results are different from Markets. We have to use a booster to get a signal, so I don`t think this is anything to do with signal strength. Could it be the way your system is set up or quality of leads/tapes etc???
There`s nothing in the manual (that I can see) that relates to subtitles.

ET mode on vhs tape is what I need as I dont want to have to use S-VHS tapes all the time as they cost more, so it sounds good.

Just wondered if it is just subtitles or can you get any page from the teletext on the channel you record?

Whats the best price seen?

Don`t know about the teletext thing, it seems unlikely and I`m away at the moment so I can`t check.

Svhs tapes are best , the results from et on vhs can be variable, even the manual says to test vhs videos first as some brands are better than others. Although in fairness I`ve never taped anything that has appeared worse than it would on normal vhs.The quality though when using svhs tapes is good, (though obviously not upto dvd standards).

I got mine from QED, £153 inc. free delivery. (£199 rrp)

If the subtitle thing is your main reason for purchase , then I would make sure it works on all set-ups before you buy, as I`m a bit concerned that it didn`t seem to work on Markets svhs.Try emailing Panasonic

I did get a reply from JVC today but they dont think any of there videos record teletext. I also thought Panasonic and JVC were connected?
"
Thank you for your e-mail.

In response I would explain that unfortunatley none of our VCRs record
teletext any longer. Panasonic have no dealings with JVC so there should be
no conflicts between the units.

Kind regards,
Customer Support"

I may get the Panasonic from Argos and try it?
