Newbie question - What is Pulsing & Artifacts?

Jack_Sprat (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 4th January 2001, 23:32

I`ve heard these terms banded around a bit and am new to the world of DVD.

Just want to know exactly what pulsing is?

And what are Artifacts?

Cheers...

Well im not sure what pulsing is - I know it is a visual p*** up on the disc but im not sure exactly what it means.

Artifacts are just like specs of dirt on the transfer. Things like hairs and dots that show up when you watch a film. Damn them.

I dont know enough about it to be telling you this though. One of the more proffesional gits should have said something by now. Hurry up lads! Your getting fat and lazy! (to be so bold).

Grrrrr.

BLAZ that was bullshit.

Pulsing is when the screen image actually looks like it is zoomin in and out o so slightly(imagine the throbbin feeling yer get when you hit yer thumb with a hammer:P)

artifacts are not dirt they are a lack of detail!

Simple, have you ever looked at a digitized photo on your PC?
From a distance it looks life like but if it has been rendered to save HD space you will notice suttle things that make it unrealistic up close, such as banding(you can see the lines between say light blue blending into dark blue. Then there is blocking.

This is when you actually see Blocking on the screen a bit like on the jerry springer show when the women get there boobs out but not as striking, its quite suttle most of them time and usually only crops up in the back ground and not on the main picture such as actors faces etc.

The third is a dancing tiny specal effect on detailed backgrounds, most of the time this can be credited to the disc transfer and not the player if the disc has lots of extras(have you noticed the picture quality of the extras is never as good as the film especially when the extras show 4:3 clips)

ESS players have a problem with this a times, and I am not being biased as my 505 has an ESS mpeg decoder.

Hope that clarifies your question.

Well I said I wasnt sure. No need to lash out at me.

What stupid names they give these things anyway! I pretty much assumed artifacts were little bits of s*** on the screen! It sounded right.

Well its just goes to show how you lot assume that everyone knows what you mean. Wow.

Phindle Spindle and Frindle on tuesdays.
