New widescreen TV and stand but where do you put the surround speakers

Adam George (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 12th May 2003, 10:07

Hi All,

Looking to upgrade my 21" TV to something new from Sony etc, most TV`s now come with good looking stand units but obviously do not have an ideal location for the additional speakers required from my Sony HTK-215 (basically tiny speakers but need to sit one either side and one on top).

Where do you guys put you extra speakers? and is there a TV available that allows you to use the existing integrated speakers for a dedicated AV purpose (you spend all this money on them but they are rarely used). I don`t mind putting the centre speaker on top.

Thanks for your help

Adam.

The JVC AV28R25EKS has an in-built subwoofer, L+R and centre speaker. It`s a fantastic looking TV, has won awards, and is available for under £500 at unbeatable.
You can upgrade to full surround by adding the optional SPR100 rear speakers for £40.
You then have Dolby surround.
Ok, it`s not 5.1 or DTS but I swear the sound is as good as the seperate Sony HTK215 I used to own.I don;t notice a difference anyway and the surround effect is excellent.
The major advantage over any seperate surround system is the neatness. As you mentioned, I also rarely use the surround so I got fed up of a bulky sub and seperate L+R`s looking untidy.I also got fed up of explaining how to work the seperate Sony system to the wife. She can work the JVC surround sound no probs.
I`m chuffed to bits as I now have sound as good as my old TV+seperate surround,it`s a damned sight better looking,it`s more user-friendly and I was able to sell the surround system to help finance it.

I agree with Bowf, I have the JVC AV32R25EKS. The set looks wonderful. I also have the Pioneer DCS 303 DVD Home Cinema system and I have the neat silver finished speakers on two pairs of equally neat silver finished thin, swan necked, speaker stands. The centre speaker sit on top of the inbuilt sub woofer on the TV so that it just peeks over the top, while the compact Pioneer sub woofer is tucked away behind the TV.
It cannot be to bad because the wife has not complained (well not very much) about the set-up.

Telboy
Have you tried just plugging your rears into the back of the TV and using the in-built sub,L+R and centre ?
You should give it a go.
You might be surprised at how good it sounds.
It made my seperate surround system (Sony HTK215) redundant and I really don`t notice much of a difference between the 5.1 I used to have and the `plain old` Dolby I have now.

God, I could get strung up by some for that last comment...!

Cheers for the responses.

I looked at the JVC and it does look good, however the girlfriend refuses to have an open stand with all the gear on show (claims it will look messy) so I need to get a tv and stand that has doors or a new stand (which are hard to find and cost nearly as much as the tv)

I looked at the sony 28" quite a curvy tv and stand but I am not too keen on the design. So it basically leaves the sony kv-28fx66s? (around 650 to 800) which is a 100hz square looking tv with virtual dolby sound and a stand with a glass stripped panel that opens `up`. I think I can then put the speaker on top of the telly when they are needed (DVD playback only)

Anyone got pictures of a tv setup with an open stand and loads of gear, video, DVD, sky etc in place?

Adam.

regarding speaker placement, you cannot really go wrong with the advice found here...

I could take a digital photo of my set-up but I`m not at home and I woudn`t have a clue how to download into this site anyway !
I think my open stand setup looks really good.
I have SKY,DVD,VCR and PS2.
Three of them are silver,so they match the TV, and I chose the slimmest DVD and VCR I could afford. The only fly in the ointment is the black PS2 but that`s shoved so far back on top of the DVD that it`s in the shadows.
Closed stands, in my opinion, are really old fashioned, especially ones with glass doors. They remind me of those living room display cabinets me dear old mum used to have that used to light up to `show off` ornaments of dubious taste !

Bowf, yes I did try plugging the rear speakers in the TV, it was good but not that good! I am afraid that it`s 5.1 Dolby for me.
