Does wooden flooring screw up your Hi-Fi`s accoustics?

MattJoyce (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 9th June 2003, 14:03

I`ve heard that having a hard flooring in your living room can be a detriment to the bass output from your hifi, so that effectively the sound
comes across as echoey and lacking depth, unlike a room with a carpeted floor that can assist your sound (the science behind this was not explained...). So, before I waste mucho bucks in wooden flooring, can anyone comment on this. I have a good sound system that I seriously dont want to see go to waste!

PS. Big Trouble In Little China - got my copy on Saturday...Russell and Carpenter are a team made in Heaven. So, when`s their 2nd Coming??

The prob with laminate type flooring is that it is a large reflective surface, and so can cause probs. If you have a couple of rugs down, and make sure your walls aren`t too bare (pictures, bookselves etc to break it up), and use decent curtains, then I don`t think you`ll have too much of a problem.
I`m not sure it`s bass output thats affected so much as the whole sound - echos will muddle the signal. If you get an echo when you clap your hands, then it`s likely it will degrade the sound.

IMHO!

I`ve got laminate flooring and a big open plan downstairs room. My Hi-Fi is on a good quality AV rack that is stood on a rug. My speakers are all on stands with spikes and the speakers themselves all have little rubber `feet`. All this added together gives me a lot better sound than when I had a carpet down and my speakers on bookshelves etc.

When I eventually get a sub I am going to stand that on the rug with my AV rack and front 2 speaker stands.

Nick, do your speaker spikes sit straight onto the laminate then? I was wary of doing this (damage to the laminate), so I have my spiked rack sat on 1p pieces, which are blutacked to the floor.

The rear speaker stands, which sit straight on the laminate, have little rubber covers for the spikes, which are specifically designed for wooden floors and came with the stands.

I`ve noticed my 1ps have moved a bit - you can see blutack squidged to one side. Mind, I do have a lot of black boxes on the rack, so it`s quite heavy. I`m thinking about getting a sheet of MDF, and blutacking that to the floor, then letting the spikes sit on that instead. That way I can get a lot more blutack down, and maybe decouple the rack a bit. Need to untangle all the cables anyway :o(

Never tried it, but I always thought that was more for amps etc. Maybe you could use them for the sub, Dave?
