Just bought an Aiwa 370.

Really. I have been looking for a player over the last 4 weeks. was basically gonna get a 3550 or an SD-100E cos no more Aiwa`s available.

Was out shopping today...wandered into Comet.. went over to DVD Players and there it is:-

" Discontinued line reduced from £199 to £179".

Total of £215 with 5 year warranty.

Sorted.

One question. I am using a cheap scart...would a decent cable enhance visual/audio quality? If so by how much? ie is it worth it?

Musta been the last one in Britain! ROFL!

Yeah, the scart WILL improve it, but how much by depends on your TV and how much you spend on the cable!

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!

What is cheap? If it cost less than a tenner, dump it, otherwise my rule of thumb is: how dark is the bands above and below a widescreen image on a 4:3 TV. The darker the better.

I have used:

1 ) 10 quid 1.5m SCART - very good contrast (black bands)
2) 20 quid 5m composite - washed out, (dark grey bands)
3) 10 quid 5m S-video - better than 2) but not 1)

Size (length) DOES matter!

Expensive but if youre desperate!

Yes - a decent cable will make a difference. Keep the cable length as short as you can get away with - I use a 1.5m cable, which seems to be the shortest available - avoid the 5m cables if possible. Secondly, the screening of signals and ground return arrangement is important.

I chose a £16 JVC branded ribbon style cable from Dixons - only a bit more expensive than their `ordinary` SCART cable. It works really well, there are 14 individually screened signal pairs - so everything is nicely isolated. (It`s not a ribbon cable in the computer sense.)

I would avoid the £35 supa-dupa cables on the market. No doubt there is a small increase in quality, but is it worth the expense to Joe Average? IMHO you would need a studio grade monitor to notice the difference.

Having waited for 2 months for an Encore to appear in the post I too wandered into Comet yesterday (Sunday) to find the last model on display just waiting to be bought!

Presumably still there because the staff were unaware it is discontinued (still had £199.95 price tag)

Proves they`re still out there if you look!!!

Now I`ve got it - can anyone tell me the best way to connect to Yam A5 amp & Thomson T.V. (unfortunatley no S-Video plug on telly) and VCR too!

I bought the last one in Thanet (that`s Ramsgate, Margate, Broadstairs area for the geographically impaired) from Comet for £149:99 last week. (There was a Tosh SD100E going for the same price.) So maybe worth a little bargaining if you see it for much more. Very pleased with the Aiwa, `cept the remote takes some getting used to (I wonder if the LG3350 one works with it?? Jimbo??)

I phoned Comet on Saturday and was told that no 370`s were left, and that their computer system would have any stock left listed, so I didn`t bother driving out to my localish stores :-(

What is the official reason that the 370 supply has stopped? I tried to ring Aiwa today, but gave up. I still want one, since the LG`s lack of VCD is more anoying then the addition of 5.1 which I would not use for the time being.

Does Jimbo know the answer?

Fraser,

You can`t go by what their customer service tells you - I phoned them for stock availability whilst standing in front of the demo model and they told me they were no longer listed!!!

Obviously discontinued due to new models to be released - still worth travelling to the stores to see what`s on the shelves, though.
