Cheap dvd player that is 5.1 compatible

Stephenm (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 12th August 2003, 18:13

I am looking to buy a cheap dvd player (about £50), that is multi-region, plays vcd and that is also 5.1 compatible, as I will want to add a 5.1 speaker system to it later. Am I asking for too much at that price? Have looked at the Daewoo DVG6000D, but apparently cant process 5.1, does this make a difference if I connect a cheap 5.1 speker set to it? All help would be greatly appreciated. :/

Hi Stephenm

I have a thread going over in the hardware forum as I`m after a new player
See here

Consensus is that what you need is a Cyberhome 505 for £59 (according to Sheppy)

Generally all present dvd players carry the 5.1 signal but you will need an amp/receiver to decode the signal using digital coxial/optical (easist connections) out unless you player has an amp built in i.e. philips 37000/sony sa30 which come with speakers or a player which has a decoder built stating it has speaker connections check that it does because alot of advertising states players have dolby decoders in them but they dont have the connections and mean optical/coax check the back of the units or aks so you can add speakers later if desired i.e. cyberhome 505. However if you want to go down the easier route an all in one with speakers and subwoofer would be the way to go but not one of the cheaper brands i.e. bush/sanyo/goodmans as the speakers are not great. The more expensive routes are better you get great sound but a lot more wires, sep amp and speakers but that will cost you 140 plus including your speakers and sub. The other route is the onboad decoder with speakers connections add some speakers later however some players have limited functions for you speakers i.e. only get 5.1 not DTS volume controls you have to adjust before playing you dvd, Cyberhome do a separate speakers that do go with 505 do a search for a company called spin i think or go to cyberhomes homepage, I would recommend just getting a dvd player plays everything that you want with optical out connections/ coax so you can connect to anything later on, you can pick up some good second hand amps/speakers or go down the road of an all in one system takes up less room and mainstream companies are know knocking out some great sounding/quality equip. Which ever way you wil spending cash now or later.

Thanks for your help. Have just ordered a Ronin P80H. Had everything that was suggested & more. Was only £64 so a bit cheaper than the other dvd players suggested when you take into account delivery charges for the cyberhome 505. :)
