LECSON 900 & Lord of the Rings - Two Towers

DaveM (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 27th August 2003, 16:12

Have owned a Lecson 900 for a couple of years and apart from one snag playing The Crimson Tide (it Wouldn`t) never had a problem.
Have just got the new Lord of the rings, plays the usual copywright screen then stops dead and does nothing - exactly the same as The Crimson Tide (I gave up on it and gave it away)
Have contacted the helpline number and been told `The DVD is too new for the software on the Lecson and so it will never play. ( I have got the most recent software upgrade ZR0720-84 already installed without problem).
I don`t particularly want to replace a perfectly good machine every couple of years if this is a typical situation
Anyone else had this problem or know a way round it.?

Dave

Dont know if this will help or not. I`ve never had the trouble you have apart from a bad copy...I overcame this by pushing the numbers on the pad. On one disc number `1` started it on another it was something like 32. After finding out what number started it, it always worked using the same number.

Hi Dave,

I have the identical problem and can work around it by using the `Access` button on the remote, and then programming to go to Chapter 1 Section 1.

This works even though `Goto` etc are blocked during the copyright message display. Now you can enjoy the film! If my method is not clear, email yadn[at]ku.oc.ooz since I do not normally look at this forum.

Strictly speaking, being told that the software will not cope with modern DVDs is not a legal argument. You have up to 6 years to report defects found with the performance of an item and the retailer should arrange to get it sorted (this is part of `being fit for the purpose`). However, in practise I found this difficult to enforce with Tescos (the Wharfedale 750s does not play all audio CDs correctly) their argument along with Wharfedale being that other makes suffer the same problem so they are not liable to sort it out. Local Trading Standards advised me this is not a legal defense but that it would probably cost more to take them to court to get the matter resolved than I would get in compensation. If enough peole are now having problems with this disc it may be worth approaching the retailers who sold the machines to try to get the problems resolved. Good luck!
