Page 1 of Cheapest 42" plasma TV

I note that some 42" plasma TV are really starting to drop in price.

Saw one at £2995 the other day in my local retail shop. Still quite dear though.

So what about UK wide, any cheaper?

The way they are going by halfing their price each year, they will eventually be within the correct price bracket for many consumers to think about getting one. I wonder what that price will be and when?

So whats the trend for next Christmas £1500 possible?

You could get a £2000 42" LG or Samsung last crimbo from a couple of shops. I will leave you to guess who.

How does the 42" plasma at £2000 perform? Is it worth the extra cash, over a good CRT model?

You really have to shop around when looking for a plasma...and for godsake audition them first preferably with some of your own DVD`s. For now Plasmas just don`t stack up against even budget CRT televisions. You do the math, which car would you go for? A £2,000 Lada or an £8,000 Volkswagen? The same applies to Plasmas. Sure you can get a whopping great 42" Plasma to stick on your wall and show off to your mates, but as soon as you touch the "on" button your face will sink and you will want your trusty 5 year old 4:3 Panny back! To see any real improvement you need to spend about £4,500 or more, even then the picture isn`t great.

Don`t get me wrong I would love a Plasma, but wait a couple of years when the technology that you would get in an 8 grand Plasma now will cost you about £1,500...and only then will the downfalls of Plasma seem irrelivant

Alternatively, if you want true home cinema, get a DLP projector instead (and a decent screen...not just a wall painted white!)

Sorry it has took so long to reply. I agree with what most of what Greg says. But what I have seen just yesterday is the new Pioneer 42 and 50" plasmas running a high def signal and it was the best picture I have ever seen...ever. Come on BBC give us high def now befor bill gates does via media player 9.

The EURO1080 tets on Astar 19.2 E that began a week ago for IBC (International Broadcasting Convention) in Amsterdam have ceased their MPEG-HD stream. There`s still a stream there using WM9.
HDDNET were on PAS3R satellite at 43 degrees W (again for IBC) also ceased 2 days ago.
I recorded the whole Euro1080 transport stream whilst it was all there - a whole 2.5 minutes on a data CD.

I was so impressed with hidef that i imported a DVHS dtheatre from the states with abouth 20 movies.Stuff like T2,independance day looks amazing.Better than the dvd.Ok it is tape based with all the usual disadvantages but its the only true source for 1080i hidef for us europeans.Its a shame that the uk/europe did not develop HIDEF.I really envy the americans.I hope the EURO 1080 project takes off and does start in jan 2004.More info on dvhs can be found on www.dvhsmovie.com.The good news is that most plasmas are HD ready anyway.
