Page 1 of Pace Twin PVR - installing larger capacity hard-disc

I know this is possible, and there`s plenty of info about it on the Digital Spy website, but for those of us who don`t wish to (or can`t) d-i-y, does anybody know of anyplace where you can take your machine and pay to have it done instead?

TBH I would take a guess that the process of replacing the 40Gig H/D on the SKY+ box would be no more daunting than changing a H/D on a PC so paying someone to do the job might not be needed. Either way the warranty is void so if you , or someone you know, is PC savvy then get stuck in.
All the normal precautions, static etc, would be the same .
Possibly the only problem would be that the recording space used/ remaining would be inaccurate .
That said if you do fancy using a larger H/D then you can get a 160 Gig 7200 RPM for around £95 so that would give you 80 hours worth of storage space.
Do a search on Google for sites that may have information on which drives are suitable and then off you go.

There`s actually a forum poll on DigitalSpy about replacing the hard drives on Sky+ boxes, and it`s apparently a straight swap with no messing around.

the Sky+ box does the grief for ya!

Seems to be on there that Maxtor 5400RPM hard drives are the favoured ones, but some noise is created and a fan needs to be added....

Guess whats happenin to my Sky+ when it gets to be a year old in February? <grin>

Oh..and mine has a duff HDD anyways, got a bad sector that crashes the box out now n again, but because a "full reset" cures it (well, let`s it record again cos the bad bit is halfway through the box`s recording time!!), Sky won`t acknowledge the fault, and I can`t 100% prove it cause you need to have a recording *starting* at the point where it goes bad!

Easier to wait and toss the drive for a new one :)

Thanks guys but the Pace Twin is a Freeview HD recorder, not Sky+.

Apparantly the disc the Pace box uses is the smaller size used in laptop computers. Don`t know if it`s the same as the Sky box.

There`s a long thread on the www.avforums.com PVR forum about this. People have successfully changed to 80GB (40 hour) drives with little problem. The down side is the cost. 80GB is about £160 for a 2.5". This is for the Fujitsu which seems to be the preferred choice.

I just bought one of these and it`s a nice gadget. I`ll get by with what I have for now. Maybe by the time the warranty expires the drives will be cheaper.
