About Eprom/flash of SCAN/Manhattan/Daewoo/Emerson

I have bouhgt an Emerson DVD player that is a clone of Manhattan, Scan,Daewoo etc.
I have opened it and I have discovered that it has not a flash device. It has an OTP eprom (ATMEL 27C040).
Well I can write a new firmware with a new version in a new Device.
Somebody knows if is posible to use a flash device? (there is a socket).
The firsts units from SCAN came with a EPROM that were updated with a FLASH device?.
