Quick question on cables.....

Butterfield8 (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 7th January 2004, 19:16

To all you people who know about cabling this is probably a stupid question but......

If the distance between my DVD player and my amp is around a third of a metre, would it be better to use Co-ax or Optical cable?

There is a reason for my question which I will reveal when the answer becomes clear.....

Just so you know, it`s by no means a HC setup as such - just my Tosh 550 DVD player into my Tosh TV which has integrated decoder with 5.1 surround - it`s only a small place we live in so it still really works for me..... :D

Any advice would be a winner

Cheers
Rob

There is no difference in quality between the two, especially for short runs. Had you needed a long cable to connect your DVD player to your amp then I`d recommend Co-ax, as they tend to have better sheilding and construction if you buy a quality lead from the likes of IXOS or QED.

Thanks Cervantes - the reason for me asking was that I visited Richer Sounds last weekend and he said that I should go for Co-ax for shorter runs (as it`s better quality apparently - kind of tying in with what you`ve said I guess) and that the only reason he`d use Optical was for long distance runs......this sort of made sense to me as I sell Networking gear and Copper can only run up to 100mtrs as a rule and fibre runs a lot further.....

...although I could be wrong again as I might be getting "fibre" with "optical".!! :D

Sorry if I`ve got the wrong end of the stick but I`m just trying to get me head round it all!!

Thanks again

Rob
