Hi,
Anybody got one of these ??? They are on sale at Safeways for £29.99 and I am told will play anything. If so will I need a multiregion hack
ReDFred
Hi, I also bought one of these after getting a flyer from Somerfield and checking this site for news about them! Paid £29.95 and they look like blinding value for money!!
Just for the record, they will play (without hacking) region 0 , 1 , 2 discs without any problems. They set up very easily, very basic true, but well worth the money.
The only thing iv`e come up against so far is that they didn`t like my DVD + RW discs that i have already copied and used on my other DVD Players (Cyberhome , PS2). They play +R perfectly, so be a bit careful on the type of media ,the box says it will play +RW and - RW ,so it could be the media / recording on the +RW discs !!
Once again though, great VFM

I dunno if its region free, but i have tried 3 dvds all from different regions and they work, so i dont know about that.
The only prob im having is with the remote control, when i press the buttons once nutin seems to happen, i have 2 move the remote around and then keep pressing them for something 2 happen. does this happen 2 ne 1 else?

Hi,
Wife just bought one today, 06/05/04. To enable Multi Region, just press the system button 3 times (at the side of the power button). At the top of the screen, you will see the format change from PAL, to NTSC and then AUTO. In PAL and AUTO forms a uk dvd will play in colour, but if you select NTSC for a uk dvd, it plays in black and white. Leave it set to Auto and it is region free
On the remote issue of the buttons, you will need to ensure that the remote is pointed at the player directly. If you point above or below, the button selection will need to be pressed a couple of times.
It also plays VCD`s ok. I put 13 Ghosts on ond it was alright.
Hope that this helps you out.
Regard,
IR

Is that all you have to do to make it region free?
Doesnt making it region free screw some dvds up?
Like u see on some of the warnings on the region free codes websites?
cheers

I think Ian has missunderstood what you mean by `region free` and confused it with the difference between NTSC & PAL.
To make you player region free follow the instructions for the Akura 141 hack on this site. When I did that, though, the region code displayed was the one for region free even though the official bumf said it should be set to region 2. Either Akura are distributing them set to region free or the hack offers region free first by default. Either way, just follow the instructions and you can`t go wrong.
Hi all
I found that Akura DVD players are region free out of the box. No hacking is required. I also found them to have excellent picture quality beating my Toshiba that i payed £300 for! The DVD player I have now is the 142s, the only negative I found was that the remotre control is way to sensitive and can be activated by any remote control i have lying around which is a pain when i am tryiong to use video essentials to set my tv up 80/
Does anyone know if this is still a problem with the 147s?
I ve had this dvd player for a few days now, and i must say that it not a bad player! :)
The only problem i have is with the remote, it doesnt seem to work unless i hold it directly pointing to the IR reciever, and is very close to it. :(
