Sony rdr gx3 and 16:9 - Help!
We have just bought a sony rdr gx3 dvd recorder but we can`t get it to display widescreen. We have Sky+ connected through the dvd recorder to a Hitachi widescreen TV. Without the dvd in the loop, everything works fine. We have obviously selected 16:9 in the setup menu but that doesn`t help.
Has anyone out there suffered a similar experience?

is just the recorder that isnt displaying widescreen or sky/tv, find it strange as the hit normall has 16:9 button that will make it widescreen large or small or panny or auto, also not all programs are transmitted in widescreen and some widescreen films/programs you will still see black bars unless you but the hitachi to 16:9 L but you probably already now that.

Thanks for the reply. I have checked that I am looking at programmes which are being broadcast in widescreen. When I connect sky+ direct it is fine. It is just the recorder that isn`t displaying widescreen from the sky+ signal.

it might be then the recorder doesnt see the widescreen signal transmitted from sky and defaults to 4:3, you did say you had set 16:9 on the recorder but have you also set sky up for 16:9 it might have defaulted back. I think you will have to give sony a call. Would also have a look at few other forums as well.

When you say it`s not recording in widescreen do you mean it`s actually not recording in widescreen or it`s simply not playing back in widescreen?
I have a Panasonic E85 and, when having recorded widescreen programmes to disc, my TV does not recognise them automatically as 16:9 when I play them back. Intead, they appear as `squashed` images.
However, all I need to do is change the aspect ratio manually on the TV and this sorts it out.

We spoke to Sony, and it is as you mention. The recorder cannot read the auto aspect signals from the sky+ box so we have to manually change to and from 16:9 4:3. Bit of a bore but manageable. thanks for the replies.
