Looking for a new DVD player

denon (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 17th August 2004, 01:40

My Warfedale M5 seems to be on it`s way out but i`ve had it a few years and it`s been well used.

What`s the best multi-region player about at the moment, i also want it to have 5.1 decoder built in like my M5

Best, or `best at a price`? You can pick up great players for under 50 quid with al lthose features and more

Plenty of quality in the £50 - £100 range now..Maybe ebven worth looking at getting one that will play MPEG4/DivX movies .. You can pick these up in that price category as well now.

Don`t throw away your old Wharfedale M5 player just yet. They can be resurrected. If it`s become unreliable reading discs, you can replace the internal DVD-ROM drive with a new one. You can even re-program the firmware and give it new capabilities. See http://www.area450.com
If you can`t be bothered to refurbish it yourself, offer it on here. I for one would be interested. I already have an Afreey LD2060 player based on similar hardware to the M5. I was lucky to find it on the local council waste tip, took it home and rebuilt it. I was amazed at what it could do, after upgrading the firmware and the DVD-ROM.

If you can stretch your budget, try the Pioneer 575. Great player that can handle SACD too!
