Page 1 of S-Video to Scart

Will an S-Video to Scart connection give me a better picture than Scart to Scart? I ask this as my TV does not have an S-Video connection.

If your DVD player is outputing S-Video via scart, you must make sure your TV scart connection is is capable of receiving S-Video signal. Else you will get a black and white picture. If it is,you will get a better picture.

It depends on what your DVD player is actually capable of outputting. Don`t confuse signal types with plug types!

SCART to SCART can mean one of three things - RGB, S-Video or Composite (in descending order of quality).

If your TV and DVD player both support RGB, you should enable RGB output on the player, and connect it to the RGB-capable SCART on your TV (usually AV1) via a fully-wired SCART to SCART cable for the best possible picture quality.

If you don`t have RGB, then S-Video is the next best option. S-Video can be carried either via a SCART socket or via a 4-pin miniature DIN socket (what most people think of as a S-Video socket). Check your instructions to see whether the SCART on your TV can accept S-Video and, if so, how to enable this input.

Likewise, see if your DVD player can output S-Video via SCART (in which case, just use a SCART to SCART cable) or if it can only support S-Video via the 4-pin DIN socket (in which case, you will need to get a cable with a 4-pin DIN plug and two phonos on one end, and a SCART plug on the other).

The remaining option is Composite, which is much worse than RGB and S-Video in quality terms, and which you don`t want to be using if you can possibly avoid it.
