Page 1 of Pansonic DMR E55 - Problems with DVD-R on PC

I have just bought this DVD recorder as recommended by many of you folks on the site. I copied my wedding video from VHS to DVD - R. It plays fine on DVD players, but most windows players dislike it, except POWER DVD. Also I cannot copy it with Nero. When I load it into to Ulead Video Studio 8 I can extract the video but no audio. Does anyone else have any experience of DVD-R on the PC or any suggestions. Or is this a limitation of the recorder?

Definitely not, everything I`ve done on my E50 (about 6 discs now :D) have been in the PC in one way or another.
Have you got Ulead set to accept the input file FOR the audio?

Most software DVD players can be pains in the butt, PDVD tends to be a bit better with troublesome stuff, and accepts .VRO files, which a lot don`t.
On the .VRO point...have you used a DVD-R definitely and not a RAM disc?

Finally, and still on the DVD-R point, did you finalise it? This could result in everything you mention above if it hasn`t been finalised.

I did use a DVD - R disc and also I did finalise it first. But Ulead Video Studio 8 will take the video and not the audio. (it can do this with other DVDs) As I said I can`t even seem to back the DVD up with another DVD back up software. Therefore I am wondering if there is something peculiar about by the Panasonic writes disks. One thing I noticed is there is no audio folder on the disc created by the Panasonic and only a video folder. Is this the reason why there is problems? Any help would be appreciated. Has anyone managed to either edit or backup dvds burnt on this.

Also are there any dvd drives in the PC for DVD RAM?

There`s a few, easier way though, and probably similar expense is a Pioneer 108 writer that can read RAM as well as write to the - and + formats.

The abscence of an AUDIO_TS folder really doesn`t make any difference in a DVD-Video file. Think it only affects DVD Audio discs.
There`s the odd player that doesn`t recognise the disc without an AUDIO_TS folder, but generally older machines.

You can`t get it to disc to disc backup? What error messages are you getting and what programs? I aint brilliant on software, but there shouldn`t be any reason why the disc won`t read or backup that I know of.
Oh, and what brand of -R are you using?

I am using the Packard Bell DVD - R disc. The DVD copier finds it hard to open some of the files to copy and creates an error message.

Can someone confirm whether they have been able to copy DVD-R discs made from the DMR e55 or to read them from a video editing software.

I have had a problem with my DVD writer on my computer, but it does seem to work with other dvds.

(yeah, ok, an E50, but so similar it shouldn`t matter!)

OK, Packard Bell...well, if they are the 1x discs, then they should be Ritek G03 dye and shouldn`t have a problem, but have you tried decrypting to your hard drive first?
Sounds silly, but some software just doesn`t like doing disc to disc copies.

Also, again sound silly but highly possible, do you have any marks on the disc?
(fingerprints/dust/scratches)
Last option (especially when decrypting), if it fails on your DVD rom drive, try it in your DVD writer drive, as it also could be a DVD Rom that`s incompatible with DVDR, although thats very very few, there are some!

DVD Decrypter is da choice for decrypting, btw, and it`s freeeeeeeeee!

I have an Panny E50 machine - I used the Packard Bell DVD`s initially, simply because I had them to hand for use with the PC. However, I found them unreliable when used in the E50. When recording a 2 hour programme in standard (2 hour) mode, the last 10 minutes would inevitably become corrupted and unwatchable. I switched to Panasonic DVD`s and have had 100% reliability since. I have edited on the PC from the Panny DVD-R and RAM discs without too many difficulties using a number of programmes, most notably Pinnacle Studio 8 and TMPEGEnc DVD Author. Some files have been reluctant to import into DVD Author fom RAM discs, but I usually have been able to get around this by copying the .VRO file directly to the hard drive first.

Try Panny DVD`s - this worked for me. Hope you get it sorted!

I agree with Nick, get a Panny DVD-R or another quality brand, and try again.

The thing that I find hard to understand is that the DVD plays on the PC properly, but DVD decrypter has problems reading the files and I have not got any back up software to work with it! Windows media player and realplayer though did not recognise the audio format! I don`t know why that should be. Does everyone think it is the DVD media at fault or could it be the way in which the Panasonic encodes the disc?

Do you guys think that the Pansaonic is worth the hassle or should I return it for another recorder e.g. philips or pioneer?

I have transferred all my childrens VHS cassetes to DVD using the 4 hour mode on an E55.

The discs wont play in power DVD, but do play in windows media player,and are recognised by DVD shrink and preview effectively.

Have you tried using DVDShrink (Freeware and excellent!!) to convert the DVD to an .ISO file and then burning with DVD Decryptor (or Nero if preffered)

Brief details here (but just use shriink to rip the DVD to your drive instead of decryptor)
