Advice needed: which is better, regular widescreen tv or rear projection tv?
I`m in the process of spending a chunk of cash on a basic home theatre set-up and need some advice on chosing either a 32inch flat screen or a 42 inch rear projection. The rear projection is about €400 more, but I can afford it. So baiscally, is worth it to go for rear projection (besides of course that its 10 inches bigger!)? What are the pros & cons? Is the picture quality good, better compared to the TV? Can I use my X-box on it safely? Both models I`m looking at are Sony. But its hard to tell in the showroom one way or the other. Any advice appreciated.

Ooooooo Kkkkkkkkkk....
Where to start?
Standard CRT TV will give a better viewing angle, and possibly a bit better contrast n colour dependant on where you sit, but maximum you`re limited to is 36".
CRT will also allow comfortable, safe playback of your X Box.
Rear Pro (standard OR LCD) will give a better screen size of 42" but a reduced viewing angle, which under normal viewing circumstances will be fine and almost unnoticable.
However, if your XBox or any other source generates a static image for more than about an hour or two, it will physically burn the screen and is impossible to remove from a RP TV without changing the screen itself.
Third option, and dependant on your spending power is a DLP unit.
Currently retailing at £1499 for the LG 44" and £1999 for the Sagem 50" these are basically RP TV`s, but with much better viewing area and a far superior picture quality.
As you are actually viewing light (hence the only TV technology currently capable of actually displaying a digital picture, your eye is the final D to A converter!), it is impossible to screen burn it!
If they`re in your price range, nip into Comet and ask to see the Sagem with the HD PC running on it...if £2K is within the price bracket, you`ll buy it! (plus you get a 50" TV that can accept a PC input too)

Unfortunately we dont have Comet in Dublin. Great info though. Much to consider. Many thanks, Jimbo!

Comet in Dublin.
Then check for local Retailers selling the Sagem Axium 50, or someone I`m sure will post the Optoscene model number.
If you find one local, and have access to a laptop or portable DVD player, take it in and have a look.
The Sagem has a 9 pin analogue input for a monitor on the front under the flap, same place as the front camcorder inputs.
Dunno about VHF tuners though, `cause that`s what you guys use, innit?
