Page 1 of how can i back up vhs to dvd

hi im looking to back up all my old vhs tapes on to dvd to save space but dont know how to do it is there and dvd/vdr combos that can do this or do i need a specic set up any one able to help me ?

Connect VCR to DVD recorder with SCART lead, and that`s all you need to do

you may need a macrovision removing scart lead if any of you`re vhs tapes are comercialy produced.

some DVD VHS combo`s allow tape to disc editing, BUT NOT ALL, be very very careful if you go down that route as to the model you select.
If the tape is Macro protected, you will NOT be able to bypass it on a Combi, but as said above, a lead can be purchased for seperate unit.

Being 100% honest I`d say buy a hard drive model DVD recorder, that writes to -R, dump from your current video to it then from it`s hd to -R.

Thing is, once you have them all transferred, and a DVD recorder under yer telly.....there`s very little chance that VHS machine will last long before you decide to store it somewhere as a backup....

Any other recorder owners think differently?

PS: only said HD unit `cause if you were gonna buy a combi, it`d be similar priced but better unit, any -R capable unit will do the job, but HD allows you to check it before dumping to disc. Oh, and +R will work, but trust me, using a - and a + disc from the same company, using the same burn speeds, the same writer, the same video file etc., and with both discs dyes` only differing by one being + (apparently), the - worked on everything tried, the + failed on 4 out of 10!

I find +R discs very reliable, and as long as you stick to a reasonable make/dye you shouldn`t make coasters. I just hook my Sony VCR to my 4KUS recorder from Asda, press play on the VCR and record on the DVD+R and 50 minutes later I have a very serviceable copy of the programme I wanted to archive. Do two to a disc at SP.

I hooked up my panny e55 to the video and some of my original vids appear to have no protection against "backup" at all, I must point out tho, i do own the original tapes and i`m mearly backing up my collection.

Did you set the booktype of the + discs to DVD-ROM, though, Jimbo? Most writers leave the booktype set to DVD+R by default, and that`s supposed to be the main cause of incompatibility with DVD+R discs.

With the booktype set to DVD-ROM and all other things being equal (dye type, etc.) a DVD+R should be just as compatible as a DVD-R.
