Well,cameras are hardware as well ! :p

Tell me this.
I assume all digital cameras come with their own software to enable downloading of pictures ?
I currently have a cheap Kodak camera with excellent software.
I frequently use it to e-mail photos down to bonusprint for prints,for example.

I fancy a Sony Cyber-shot though.
Safe to assume the Sony comes with similar software ???

If you`ve a card reader in your PC, just take the card out of the camera and put in PC. XP see`s this a mini hard-drive - no more software needed. Guess that older windows OSs are the same.

Don`t know about sony (my camera`s a Konica) but I`ve always assumed they come with the necessary s/w.

Got a Sony Cybershot and XP found all the drivers. XP software OK for cropping, simple editing and sending via e-mither.

All digital cameras will tend to come with two pieces of software (and cables) - drivers for downloading the images to the pc and photo organising/editing software.

However, it`s often easier to download the images using a card reader, which can be found quite cheaply. Be aware that Sony uses the proprietary `memory stick` of which there are only 1 or 2 manufacturers (Sony being one) - hence higher prices on the memory cards.

Compact Flash (as found on Canon cameras) is generally regarded as the best flash memory and is the norm on professional digital cameras - but SD and smart media are also commonplace, reliable and relatively cheap.

Photoshop is the industry standard for pros for retouching, resizing etc and most canon cameras come with Photoshop Elements - which will give you more than you need.

Suppose it`s not difficult to guess which brand I like - I have an EOS SLR digital and Ixus for snaphots and pub/party photos.

Is this the point when I *shouldn`t* mention that with the help of Reestit`s code, an Egg card and some knowledge from the sales floor, my pal last week netted an EOS 300D for the equivalent (once all cashbacks come in etc) of £394 and got 100meg online storage and a spare 256 meg Memory Card from Canon?

That is a bargain! I`ve had one for work and one for home for over a year now and I love it to bits....but if you just want snapshots, it`s over the top (and big!) and an Ixus would be a better bet.

Or a Fuji 607, bought as the kids` christmas pressies and "borrowed" when Mother needs a snapshot camera ;)

She`s actually into semi-seriously getting to know photography, always had an SLR unil a recent split with hubby who took the camera and she wanted to replace it. What she also wanted, though, was not to spend fortunes for film and developing as she isn`t into it that seriously....make sense? :/

She seems happy with it...and the two Fuji`s she bought got her free delivery! Lol

Yes (with my Cybershot I`ve found it easier simply to download and then use XP software). Though note that Sony uses a different memory card from most other cameras. This is fine for me (I have a Cllie PDA which will read the cards and when on holiday it makes a great portable photo album), but if you already have non-Sony memory cards it can be a bit awkward. If you do go for a Sony, I`ve found ebay is the cheapest source of memory cards.

Just ordered a P150, can`t wait. Should go along great with my Sony computer that has a Memory stick slot. Keeping up with technology is my vice. This makes my 5th digital camera.......lol!
