i am interested in getting sky+, but am wondering first if that when i record something onto the `box` can i then transfer it onto a video cassette?

Yes, unless its a Box Office movie which is protected by Macrovision, then you would need one of those Sonel SCART leads.

Simple answer is Yes. We have transferred many shows to either VCR or DVD recorder with no troubles at all.
That said you may have trouble transferring any Box office movies as they may contain a macrovision signal? which makes copying difficult /sub-standard or impossible.

What is a Sonel Scart lead - how much are they? Can you then record from Sky Box Office?
