Digital Video Essentials DVD - Colour Balancing Question

Luffer (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd December 2004, 08:48

Hi,

Ive rented the Digital Video Essentials disc from Lovefilm to help me set up my Panasonic CRT TV correctly.

To set component colour balance I need a blue filter, which comes with the original disc, but not with the rented one.

Does anybody know what I can use as an alternative. (Ive looked for blue cellophane sweet wrappers etc all night with out any success.

Any suggestions gratefully recieved!

To do it properly you will need the correct colour filters. The best you can do would be to do the rest of the disc and guess at the blue then re do the first part. Then try different scenes. Does grass look green or grass coloured. Does everyone with a tan look like Des O`conner?

I think you can order THX blue filter glasses from their web site.

On my TV everyone with a tan looks like Ron Atkinson! Does this mean a re-calibration or an excorcism? Cos I`m sure he was sacked from TV. I think I`ll give Brendon Batson a call.

Thanks 42%,

Thats what Ive done, + balanced red and green using Cokin photographic filters for these 2 colours.

Tanned people looked sort of Mahogony, then I realised I was watching Bargain Hunt and David Dickinson really is that colour.

The only blue filter I could find (off a childs toy - OK so Im a cheapskate), doesnt seem dark enough to convert the white on the reference page to blue.

I was wondering if any of you professionals had an inside tip, such as Cokin 80A / B / C filter or similar as an alternative. (which may be quicker & cheaper than trying to order from New Jersey at christmas.)

I would contact lovefilm and ask for the filters or my money back. (unless it stated there was no filter)

If I come across my blue filter I will let you know and lend it to you if you want. Don`t hold your breath though. I have not used it for about two years and have no idea where it is. I tend to do it just by eye now.

Thanks for the offer 42%.

Out of interest, where in Leicester is your shop?

I ask as I actually work for a company based on Hamilton Industrial Park (though personally home based in London) and I am up there 1 or 2 days a week. I have a colleague asking me for advice on DVD recorders around the £120-£150 mark might appreciate your details!

Cant really ask Lovefilm for my money back as its a 6 week free trial I probably wont continue!!
