Page 1 of Progressive Scan?

Is it right that to benefit from progressive scan you need a `component in` on your TV?

Mine has no component in (and its new), so are these input sockets not all that common?

As I understand it,you`re right.
No component = no progressive scan.
Which is why I returned a TV to Philips about 4 months ago.
They stated "progressive scan" so I assumed it would have component.
It came,no component.
It went back. >:(

Sorry to be a numpty but what is component in - what am I looking for?

I thought it related to LCDs and plasma - not CRT (but I could be wrong!)

CRT can have progressive as well.
I can`t explain the full technical `spec` of component but in physical terms it`s 3 quite thick,and seperate,cables from the back of your DVD to your TV.
They are red,green and blue.
They only deal with picture as well,not sound.
You have to connect for sound seperately.

Thanks Bowfer - very informative, even if it did go a bit over my head in parts. It doesn`t seem to mention scart though - how does that compare?

Unfortunately, my main system is a Panasonic E55 (with component out I think) to a 32" Sony Wega (no component input) and in the bedroom a Panasonic S27 (no component out) to a Goodmans 17" LCD (that has component in) - so I can`t get the benefit! And no, I don`t want to hook the E55 up to the LCD.

Its just wierd to me how all the magazine reviews are on about progressive scan and yet a very new TV by Panasonic has no component in, I would have thought that if it was a super populaer thing then most TV`s shoul support it.

Also, heard that its only a benefit for NTSC and not realy for PAL, all very confusing for a novice like me. So im not sure if it matters and i should change my TV, or whether it a bit of a gimmick I dont really need (i have a 28 wide Panny PM11)?

It certainly seems to me that theres a whole bunch of TV`s people will have that cant benefit from prgressive scan, does any one else find this problem?

It`s certainly not a gimmick, but it`s definitely more beneficial for NTSC than PAL. Prog scan removes the visible line structure and pretty much eliminates artefacts like jaggies.Progressive NTSC actually looks better than interlaced PAL in a lot of circumstances.

So if I understand this correctly, does this mean that you cannot benefit from progressive scan DVD players/recorders on a CRT TV in the UK? Which is what most people will be viewing on. I`ve been browsing, but so far haven`t found a single CRT TV with component in sockets for sale on `tinternet...Don`t they sell them here? Or is it that component input is no significant advantage over RGB?
