Oh My goodness me! Have we had problems with the above DVD recorder. We are on our second machine in 3 weeks and that is going back tomorrow!
1st machine - When I wanted to open the drawer display kept flashing up opening/closing without actually doing anything!
Then during the 2nd week the drawer kept opening on it`s own accord with no intervention by me using the remote!!
Finally yesterday was recording, we heard a pop and that was it - only the time appeared and startup - wouldn`t let us do anything including giving us our DVD back!
2nd machine (picked up this morning) Can`t set the thing up - the leads were left in the same place from when we took the other machine out. Had the TV on AV as before but display kept asking is TV on! >:( Just about had enough. Anyone any suggestions or recommendations on choosing a different make DVD recorder as it would be most welcome!
Bobster I see your a newbie to the site. lets just say donot get another Philips machine. They are all plauged with problems and i mean all. i have lost count the amount of times there have been threads regarding philips dvdr issues. The machines are terrible to the point of no return.
Dont let this put you off rec dvd as Panasonic and Pioneer have very good machines and will give you no trouble at all. Some people get put off after owning a philips,,mine lasted 3 months and now is just used as a dvdplayer as I do all my recordings on pc
Take it back to the shop and swap for a different make. fixing it will just give you more problems down the line. Check out older threads in this forum and you will see what I mean

Wish I knew about this site before hand! Thought I had done fairly well in my research but obviously not!
Influencing my decision in getting another one is that I had already done a load of recordings using RW+ format (converting huge collection of videos to DVD that have collected off TV over the years that you still can`t buy on DVD) and also bought a load of blank RW+ dvds in the process. So I need to find a machine that a) will play the recordings I have already done and b) also record on the RW+ dvds I have left as have about 50!
A lot of the cheaper DVD Recorders will record to DVD+RW, but most don`t have RGB input, if that`s a problem for you. The Sony machines are dual compatible and will record onto +RW. I think you can find the cheaper model online for about £280 (for example here for a multiregion version).
I must confess I`ve had no problems with my 610, but obviously many have, so it`s probably best to avoid.
I`ve had a Philips DVDR75 for quite a while now, and I have to say it`s been very reliable as well. I noticed that my local Comet were selling the DVDR80 for £200, which I think is a very similar model, and that seems very good value to me (though it won`t satisfy the legions of those who will avoid Philips products at all costs after the experiences they have had.)
