Macrovision and Sony - the devil`s spawn

Mark Sayers (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 29th May 2001, 17:53

Just on whim whilst playing with my new toy, thought I`d try to record a DVD to Digital8 camcorder. I used the S-Video link and expected the usual loss of sync and picture tearing.

Crystal clear video was on the LCD screen (quite sexy really), all was fine for 10 secs then the message "Copy Inhibited" apeared and about 5 sec later the camcorder was automatically shut down.

Play back gives me 10 sec of perfect copy. Sony are in league with the devil :-)

So if anyone fancies trying with other digital camcorders, mine is a Sony TRV120E with analoge in enabled. But I doubt you will any better result, but please do try to prove me wrong.

Now to find another hack for the camcorder, to defeat Macrovision detection.

Mark

All European Video cameras with iLink connectors are meant to have iLink-in disabled by default. I heard that many have S-Video input disabled as well.

Software hacks tend to exist for the Sony cameras, be warned some limit you to using a dongle that only works with one camera. The better solutions are software based that run on a PC, connect to the firmware and change some of the settings (normally have an option for both temporary or permanent setting) inc ilink/S-Video in.
