PAL Versions

bob 76 (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 6th June 2001, 14:12

Could someone please give me a hand in understanding the different versions of PAL, as I have been unable to find a good source of information.

I know that there are two standards PAL50 & PAL60, am I right in saying that the difference is in the frequency shift between the Audio and Visual. The reason I think this is I was unable to get sound from my UK video recorder in Norway, though I got a perfect picture.

The reason I`m asking is to make sure that a DVD player that I bought in norway will work okay in the UK.

Cheers for any help you can give

No - you`re thinking of PAL-I (used in the UK) versus PAL-G (used in most of Europe). It specifies the audio subcarrier used on RF (aerial type) connections *only*. In other words, if you`re using line-level SCART or phono connections with separate audio outputs (which you will be - DVD players don`t have RF outputs), it`s not something you need to worry about.

A DVD player bought in Norway will be 100% identical to one bought in the UK, with the exception of the fitted mains plug.

The difference between PAL-50 and PAL-60 is something else entirely. See the FAQ on this site for more details.
