HDD/DVD Recorder or seperate units?

Digiteer3 (Competent) posted this on Friday, 23rd September 2005, 01:15

May I ask the group`s advice?

I need a more modern unattended recording solution to my current Grundig Freeview Box + Thomson Nicam VCR + 100`s of VHS tapes.

It might be old-tech, bulky and slow to review recordings but it also is very reliable!

I am concerned about the reported occasional unreliabilty issues mentioned on other Forums with the Liteon 5045 timer recordings - to my mind, any `lost` recordings are too many!

Are the new 5026s (I only need 80GB BTW) now more reliable, doe sanyone know?

Would it be better to get a Humax Freeview PVR 80Gb box (very reliable according to the Humax forums plus has a digital Freeview Tuner, unlike the Liteons) and a simple Liteon DVD Recorder for archiving instead of the integrated solution.

Or,
Wait for the `next generation` Liteons 9due Q4 this year) and hope that they are more stable / suitible.

Or,
Pay more and get the Panasonic HDD/DVD Recorder which seems to be very reliable but has lousy UK Customer Service?

I`d be very grateful for your advice on the subject.

Kind Regards
Digiteer

The Panasonic stans miles above the liteon. there is a freeview version of it (DMR EH60D) which will provide better recordings than an external digital box.

...but only if the Panasonic offers lossless digital to digtal recording. The Sony 500 Freeview dvd recorder did not so you had the red dot all over your recordings.
For Freeview recordings you are better off with a proper PVR from Thomson or Fusion which not only allow you to watch a freeview channel while recording another-you can even record 2 at once while watching an earlier recording.Don`t think Panny will do that.
You then get a separate dvd recorder-or better still one with an additional HDD so you can edit your recordings before you burn them to dvd
