Page 1 of Philips DVDR70 RGB loopthrough in standby?

I`ve just bought one of these, and have one small issue with it. According to a review of this model it should provide an RGB loopthrough with the recorder on or in standby.

In reality I`ve found that RGB loopthrough is only provided when the recorder is switched on, in standby the RGB input is degraded to composite video before being output to the TV. It`s a bit annoying having to switch the recorder on just to get RGB to the TV - does anyone know if there`s any way around this? I know you can get firmware updates, but have no idea if this issue is likely to be addressed.

My DVD-R70 has always passed RGB in standby. And that was both before and after the two firmware updates I have done to it since I bought it about two years ago.

Have you got your external RGB source on EXT 2 and your TV on EXT 1?

Also is your external RGB source actually outputting RGB because if it is not you would get the symptoms you describe.

Or more likely, is the Scart lead you are using from the external RGB source, a simple lead instead of a fully wired one?

Again you would get the symptoms you describe. I know from experience that that can happen as it happened to my fathers DVD-70 and Sky digibox, which I found had been wired up using a simple Scart lead.

Thanks for the ideas Fred, but I know it`s something to do with the recorder `cos of the change in picture quality on the when the Philips is switched between on/standby. The telly`s definitely getting RGB when the Philips is on - so I know the cabling, freeview box/tv settings and scarts used are all good/correct.

To back this up, when the recorder is in standby you can toggle the freeview box output between RGB/composite and not see any change in quality on the tv, by the time the signal gets to the tv it`s composite video regardless of what the freeview box output is. If you repeat this test with the Phlips switched on you get a clear difference.

Are you certain you were getting RGB through on standby? Would be useful to know whether this is a problem with mine or a general design inadequacy with this model.

But have you actually checked the Scart lead? I mean take it apart and look don`t just look at the pins from outside. The Philips will output RGB when on irrespective of input signal, so it it`s only receiving composite it will out put RGB when on and pass composite when in standby.

Both my father and myself have a DVD-R70 each and I have a Pye PRV-645 (Philips 610 clone) all three machines defiantly pass RGB when in standby if the input is RGB.
