The only time I have had to have mine connected to the telephone line was when I was setting the Sky+ to record a Prem Plus game.
Unless you are a subscriber to Prem Plus you should be safe leaving the box disconnected.
Our previous Sky digibox was connected on the day of installation and left disconnected from then on for about two or three years with no problem so you should be safe doing the same.

Part of the contract you signed with Sky tells you that you need to keep the phoneline connected for 12 months.
In theory,if you don`t then Sky could charge you for the interactive subsidy,but in practice you only need to keep it connected to use interactive games/voting or ordering PPV movies or sport.
So you should have no problem disconnecting it.
But if you have a MULTIROOM install,you need BOTH boxes connected permanently to prevent cheap second cards being sold on.
And they DO check on multiroom installs

yes as the others say its meant to be for 12 months, they called me once about it and i just told them i was having the floorboards done, then the carpets, then the floorboards again and so on for the year....
I think they promise the companies that market themselves interactively with Sky that its in the contract, so people must have access etc....

As per the previous posts, in theory you`re contracted to remain connected for 12 months. I knew someone that worked for a company that developed software/hardware for these type of set top boxes and he said that they can/do collect (a surprising amount of) data from them :$ . By data, I took it that he was refering to what channels you had watched and for how long etc but I didn`t get to speak to him in any detail about it, I wish that I had now....

If you`ve got Multiroom, it`s got to be connected all the time, not just the first 12 months- If you disconnect at all you WILL get a warning, if it`s still not connected a couple of weeks later, you`ll get a final warning telling you your sunsidised multiroom subscription will be charged at the full price if it isn`t connected... and believe me, they WILL do it!!!

I have got multiroom and i unplugged the sky box from the telephone line while decorating, and sure enough we got a snotty letter from sky telling us to plug it back in. It was only disconnected for about a week :(

Yes, got the same letter. I accidentally cut the phone cable so have had to run a temporary extension until I get it sorted out.

They do also do the software upgrades in the dead of night, so it needs plugging in for those - but you can force a software upgrade whenever you want.
Probably more applicable to Sky+ owners as they regularly iron out bugs and add new features (like live rewind and the funky new menu background!!!!)
