Wot OS are you using?

If it`s Win9x, try booting to `Safe` mode (95-press F8 on `loading... message or for win98, press+hold CTRL key before main boot screen)
Once in safe mode, go to device mangler (right click `my computer` select properties, then device manager tab) Delete any CD/DVD devices listed. Close down & reboot. System should see the DVD & plug`n`play it.

You can test if the drive is OK by using a win9x recovery/boot disk. This should allow you to access the drive in MSDOS with real mode drivers. If not, then try re-running the flash-firmware disk again - it should be able to restore the backup of the old firmware image(an RPC2 image, I presume). Hope this helps.

When you boot up and the screen tells you what hard disks / memory / CPU etc you have (the DOS style looking bit) - does it list your DVD drive as a device ? - if not they is sounds like you`ve killed the drive to me and I rekcon only sending it back to Pioneer would solve it - not sure they`d fall for the `it`s under warranty` thing though !
if it is found try reflashing it - or as previosuly said use a boot disk to check the drive - it may jus tbe that windows has `forgotten` about it

I could be wrong though !
