Modern Synths

Paul uk (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 13th March 2006, 11:53

Hi, I used to have and old syth and recorded on an Akai 4 track and am revisiting my youth.

I`ve just been bought a Novation KS-4 midi-synth and am wondering how to hook it up and what I`ll need.as Ive just found out it doesnt even come with onboard speakers.

I am a technophobe so please advise me in terms a complete idiot could understand.

I would like to lay down tracks on my computer, if not too complicated, so could you recommend what I`d need for very SIMPLE recording. EG Connections and software, and where I can get them form.

Many Many Thanks

Hi Paul,

This link may help. There are other guides to MIDI on the web too.

Many keyboards now come with USB connection and drivers so you can hook directly up to the PC. Failing that you will need MIDI cables and a suitable PC MIDI interface (sound cards often come with these, although you will need an adapter cable).

As for software, there is a lot of choice. Cubase SE3 might fit the bill. Or maybe Cakewalk Home Music Creator.

If you are near any major musical instrument shops like Andertons in Guildford, I suggest you go in and get them to suggest and demo some examples of what might suit your needs.

Hope this helps.

p.s. the KS-4 looks wicked, are you happy with it?
