Looking for a decent sub-woofer

Philip Ellis (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 19th October 2001, 11:20

Hi

I`m looking for a decent active sub-woofer that doesn`t cost a fortune.
I`d like it to be quite compact. Does this affect performance drastically? My room is about 15` by 12` if that help. I`d also prefer a black one so it doesn`t stand out too much.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

PE

What size of fortune can you run to?

Ideally, not more than £50 although I`d spend a bit more if it meant getting a good `un.

Somebody prove me wrong (please - `coz I`d like one too!) but I don`t think you`ll get a good `un for under £250.

I have a Gale Sub 10 from Richer for £99 which I think is a very decent subwoofer - something like 70 watts of power output which is superb for the price - check out www.richersounds.com for more details under speakers and then subwoofers

Anyone tried the Paradigm PDR10? Richer do it for £150, and it does get good write ups on www.audioreview.com. Westy recently recommended the Yammy 320 (cheapest I found is £267 at qed-uk.com) - may be beyond my budget at the moment, perhaps I ought to wait.

I`d imagine that this sub will only work with the JBL system, so if you have an amp already, may nor ba appropriate...

I too am trying to find a sub, ideally for under £200

Richer sounds seems to be the best place for subs they have the
paradigm for £150 and also the Moudant Short for £150.

My concern however with these subs is that although they have won awards this was 7 years ago (one award in 1995!! ).

I have just bought the new mission m series speakers, would these old subs be upto supporting the new rage of speakers from mission?.
I am concerned a 7 year old sub by todays standards is in fact not very good at all.

Anyone any thoughts on these older subs from richersounds and if they fit in with the newer range of speakers?
