Surround Headphones

Tris (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 21st October 2001, 21:57

Ok, so I`ve brought a TV and DVD player, and want to build a complete DD 5.1 system. Trouble is, I live in a semi with family, and I`m going to live in halls at uni next year so a whoppin` great seperates system isn`t going to make me very popular. I`ve read a bit about surround headphones, What hi-fi seem to like a Philips pair for £140, I`ve also seen some Sonys which claim to use virtual DD and DTS, but cost £350. Has anyone used these or other models, if so are they any sort of alternative to a seperates system? Or is an all-in-one packages with tiny speakers and a sub a better option, bearing in mind i`ll have to keep the volume down? Any advice much appreciated.

Surround Headphones a waste of time and Money . I`ve got a Yamaha TSS-1 syatem . Its got 2 Digital Inputs 1 Co-Ax , 1 Op , 2 Analogue plug your VCR in as well , DD5.1 Decoding , DTS Decoding . Comes with 5 Sat Speakers and a Compact Sub ( But BASS is there if you want it ) . It comes with the Digital Cables to get you going and it can be quiet with good sound , I`m in the same sit at home. £170.00 the Lot .

Also, I`d say that owning a 5.1 system would make you *very* popular with your corridor-mates in hall - everyone will be coming round to watch DVDs in your room :-)

When I was at uni I had a mono 14" Grundig TV and VHS VCR - and believe me I felt privileged.

Hello all,

As a rule suround headphones are not that good. Saying that after a recent chat with Dolby Labs there is a new system coming along called Dolly Headphone. This system will work with any headphone but you will need to have an amp,TV,.... with the system inbuilt . so not much help there, sorry.

All the best,

Andrew.

Gazza - I checked out some reviews for the Yamaha system and they seemed excellent. For anyone else whose interested I found it at http://www.makingwavesaudio.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Yamaha_TSS_1_Home_Theatre_System_75.html for £149 including next day delivery. Think I`ll give it a try.
