Plasma tv troubles ??

C(.)(.)PS89 (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 25th March 2007, 22:37

Anybody know anything about plasma`s ?? :/

Switched on my Fujitsu this afternoon and the colours have gone a bit strange , its as if your watching a dodgy pirate dvd, I`ve also noticed that if I try to switch from s-video to video theres no white writing in the boxes .
I`ve check my skybox and tried the dvd player and its the same with on both ,so its not any of them .
I left it off for a few hours tried it again and it lasted about 5 mins before it messed up again >:(

Now I`m wondering if I should have it looked at which will cost £80 before parts and labour or just right it off and some how try and buy a new one .

Its 3 years old and out of warranty .

Thanks in advance

Might be, but remember under Trading Standards you have the "six year" rule.

Basically, if a unit is deemed to have failed prematurely, then you have the right to have it repaired or replaced, however and this is the real stinger to it, the burden of proof is on the consumer.
YOU need to prove it hasn`t lived up to it`s 6 year lifespan and has prematurely failed, not just a fault from over use or damage etc.
(eg: if you have it on 18 hours a day then it`s reasonable to assume it wouldn`t have made it to the 6 years.)

Also the Manufacturer or Retailer can make a reduction in the replacement or refund costs as per the "Enjoyment received"

This is done by dividing the purchase price by the 6 year lifespan, multiplying that by the use so far and deducting from the original price.

E.G.: Purchased 3 years ago at £1200. Divide by 6: £200 per year, use so far 3 years so 3x £200 = £600, deduct from sale price = £1200-£600=total refund or replacement value of £600.

It can be a hard route to go down as you need to initiate all proceedings and may have to pay for an Engineer to give you a fault report, but dependant on the OSP it may be worth the effort.

No point just writing it of...even at £80 to look at it it`s worth getting a repair estimate.
(And there must be someone willing to estimate a repair cheaper than £80 surely???)

Final point: to me, using my logic and way of thinking, if the set was fine for 5 minutes after a period of being switched off, something must be overheating...so this could be a simple repair after all or could be a knacked screen....I`d still get the opinion of an expert then ring your local Trading Standards office for advice.

HTH and good luck
