recording from freeview telly

bought a new toshiba telly wlt68 which is fine,so thought i,d ditch the video and buy a dvd recorder.so i bought a toshiba d-r160. But my problem is i can only seem to record with the television switched on,and only the channel i,m watching ! So if i go out i have to leave the telly on ? and becouse the telly has built in freeview i have no alternative but to watch the programme being recorded.
Can anyone advise me if there is any way around this or do i simply have to purchase a different type of recorder ? help please !!

Buy a Freeview PVR.

Seems quite normal if the FV tuner is built into the TV that when switched off you wont be able to record from it.

You really should have asked these questions before buying the set.

A Freeview PVR will allow you to record 2 channels simultaneously while using the FV tuner on your tv to watch a third

Or buy a £20 freeview box to connect into the DVD recorder. Then you can record any Freeview channel from that on your existing recorder, while watching a different one on the TV.

...........usually switching the TV into standby keeps the tuner active. It does on my TV anyway.
Try that.
