Region 1 DVD playback problem

davidm9 (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 6th December 2001, 10:39

I have a Fidelity TV (PAL) and a Wharfedale M5 which is hacked to play multiregion.

If I play Region 1 DVDs on the M5 they come out black & white and grainy on the PAL TV but if I connect the M5 to my NTSC compatable portable TV they play fine.

How do I sort this problem ?

David,

I had the same problem with my Hitachi. If I played R1 they came out B+W, yet R2 were fine. It turned out that one of my scart sockets accepted S-Video only whereas the other accepted RGB input. My DVD outputs in RGB. Simply by switching the scart lead from the DVD to the socket that accepts RGB cured the problem.

Hope this helps.

From the setup menu on the M5 you can choose which signal you would like to output from the player. The default seting for this option is auto but when I set the player up for my parents the picture on there (old) TV for R1 dvds was B&W. I changed the signal output to PAL rather then have it automatically detected and this fixed the problem.
