Why does DVD go quieter than TV?

leemus (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 6th December 2001, 14:42

Hi.

Myself and a few of my mates have all noticed the same thing when watching a DVD. The sound on the TV goes right down as soon as you start the DVD & you have to turn it up considerably.

We all use SCART cables.

I have a video, digibox, dvd & Philips digital TV all running together through the use of SCART sockets.

Anyone got any ideas please?

In a word - increased dynamic range. Hang on, that`s three words.

I believe it is something to do with the set up of the DVD player`s menu.
I think that a few players suffer from this when using Scart from DVD to TV.

I`ve not noticed it too much, but have found on the R1 Shrek the soundtrack is much quieter than other DVDs

I posted a message like this and it`s not really to do with `increased dynamic range`. In a film with a decent soundtrack there may be more fluctuation than say Eastenders - made for TV and heavily compressed - But here`s what it was for me...

Is your TV stereo, or is it 5.1 cause I am running my DVD player out of the scart into a nicam TV. The film I`m watching is outputting on 5 channels so consequently the overall volume is considerably reduced. I realised this was the case when I put in my R1 Boogie Nights. One of the options on this for language is `English - 2 ch. stereo` Suddenly I had full volume...normal TV style. So my conclusion is that you can
1)check your DVD`s to see if they have a 2ch soundtrack
2)turn up your TV
3)buy a nice new surround system ;-)

They all do it, but some are deffo worse than others.
Only thing I can put it down to is the level at which the DVD makers record the soundtracks. We all know that music cd`s can vary a fair bit. Some don`t need your stereo turned up too far, some do.DVD`s must be the same. It`s got bog all to do with set-up.
It DOES suck though ! Big time sucks !
Some DVD players, like the Tosh 210 and the Samsung 511, offer a function that boosts the volume and means your TV doesn`t need turning up anywhere near as far.Tosh call it ` speech ` and I think Samsung call it ` night `, as they say it`s designed for nightime viewing when you want to hear the voices but you don`t want the explosions to wake up her-indoors. Purists might say this compromises the soundtrack but it helps me enjoy the films better, and that`s all that matters.

Soz Bowf - I`m a purist. I want to hear the dialogue and then I want the explosion to make the plaster drop off the walls.

Most dvd players are like this as already said. Some are a lot worse than others. I don`t claim to know why but this is my experience .
I used to own a philips player with which i had to turn my tv right up to hear. Then when i got my pioneer it played a lot louder, almost as loud as normal tv. The function that both of these players had was something called trusurround but the difference on the pioneer player is that i could turn this off which made the sound a lot louder. On the philips it is not possible to turn this off so the sound was always low. That is what i put it down to. It even mentions in the manual that the sound will need to be turned up when this function is switched on.

The key is to check the players manual, if not mentioned, post on DVD Reviewer!
