Page 1 of Setting up DVDR with Sky box
Hardware Forum
Hi, I hope someone can help with this problem...
Just bought a LG DVD DR175 and am setting it up. We have a TV with 2 SCART sockets and a Sky box with 2 SCART sockets. The signal is brought in on a cable to the Sky box and there is NO separate aerial to the TV.
I have set all the SCART leads as per the instructions. In essence this is a SCART lead from the sky box in to the DVDR, and a SCART lead from the DVDR out to the TV.
The TV can `see` the output from the DVDR, as I can play a pre-recorded DVD absolutely fine.
However, the DVDR cannot `see` the output from the Sky box. I have set it to autoscan for the signal to no effect. As a test I tried putting the Sky on and recording a DVD, but it came out blank so obviously did not work.
There is a setting on the DVDR setup for AV2, which can be flicked between `Decoder` or `Other`. This makes no difference.
Where am I going wrong, or is there something I have missed?
Many thanks for any help to be given.
Regards,
J.
Looks like you need a third scart lead, going from the Sky boxes second scart output in to the DVD recorders scart input, the symbol is usually a box shaped like a tv screen with an arrow pointing in to it or it may just say AV in or similar.
All the best
Gerald.
RE: Setting up DVDR with Sky box
thanks for taking the trouble to reply,
the second scart socket on the sky box is already taken by a scart lead going up to the TV.
are you saying that I should take it out of the TV and put it into the DVDR? i don`t think this would work because then the scart lead currently going from the DVDR to the TV would have to be removed and therefore nothing would be connected to the TV
puzzling....

RE: Setting up DVDR with Sky box
Have you set your DVD recorder to record from the AV input that the SKY box is plugged into. On my DVD recorder I have to set it to record from AV2 which correspondes to the scart socket the SKY feeds into.
If you`re trying to recordfrom say channel 1, that would normally be the built in tuner recording from BBC1 but as you`ve not got an ariel cable attached it will just be a blank blue screen.
RE: Setting up DVDR with Sky box
Hi,
Yes I have got the setting to AV2.
I was expecting to see a picture on the screen, but you indicate I would only see a blue screen... I think I got that at one point but did not realise that this meant it was `seeing` the sky feed.
I`ll look at that again this evening.
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

Check the selector switch at the back is set to RGB.

RE: Setting up DVDR with Sky box
Hopefully you`ll have sussed it before you look at this thread again.
When there is no aerial input, just Sky, there is no need for any RF leads, as you will only have the Sky source to record from. Therefore, you will not need to use Autoscan (nothing to find) and you certainly don`t want to record Sky via RF as that would only have Mono sound.
Only SCART or the separate stereo audio outputs from Sky give stereo audio on your TV or hifi.
It sounds as if you have set it up correctly, unless you have the Sky and TV SCART leads connected the wrong way round on the DVD recorder.
Usually one od the SCARTs will be two-directional (in/out) and one will only be an input. This isn`t always the case, but is a useful rule of thumb.
If you look caretfully at the back of the DVD Recorder (or the manual, if it is to hand) it should say "Decoder" or "Input" for one SCART and "TV" for the other one. Make sure you have the Sky box connected to the Decoder input and the TV connected to the TV output.
There should be a button on the DVD Recorder remote that allows you to switch between external inputs. (It may be called "Input", "A/V", "Source" - something like that)
With the DVD recorder switched on, press this button until you see the Sky picture. Don`t just look for AV2 - that may be wrong. You should go through a fuzzy screen (untuned tuner), blank screen for front inputs, maybe a blank screen for firewire inpout, if you have that - there`s several inputs you may have. Keep going until you see a TV channel and can change that channel via the Sky remote.
Then remember what that source is called on the DVD Recorder. As some have said, it may be AV2, but it may be called another reference on that brand of DVD recorder.
Once you know, it will always be on that source, so that is the source you need to select to record from.
If you really can`t work it out, try attaching something else (DVD player or VCR) to the Decoder SCART input and see if you can find that to record from!
You will get there, just stick with it and think logically. :)
Thanks all, and particularly to Sue Brown. Without having read your post until just now, last night I did pretty much what you suggested! I discovered that the real key is that button on the remote to switch A/V. Once I had found that it was relatively plain sailing; as you said, the picture appears on AV2 and can be recorded no problem.
But boy oh boy, don`t those manuals make it difficult!
I now look forward to happy recording in hopefully much better quality than my duff old VHS recorder.
Best wishes to the entire support community.

RE: Setting up DVDR with Sky box
That`s great!
It`s always very difficult to cure the problem when all we have to go on is the info given by a poster, and we can`t just materialise in your living room and show you what to do.
But we will always try our best to help.
You know where we are if you have any other queries. :)
Glad you got it sorted.
Well done Sue. ;)
