Does anyone know if is possible to play vcd cdrs on a Samsung 709.It will play an original ok but when I play a backup disc, it shows up as NO DISC?

The 709 doesn`t, as a rule, play CD-Rs. There are a few brands which work, such as Princo and Vivastar, but the vast majority of CD-Rs won`t play at all. This is a hardware limitation (i.e. the laser unit is physically unable to read them) and there`s no easy way round it.

Bottom line is that if you want to play burned VCDs you`re better off getting a different player :-(

I`ve just tried CD-R`s and CD-RW`s in my 709, but it recognises neither :-(
Though both my Pioneer 505 and Ferguson DV400FE will play CD-RW`s fine though they both hate CD-R`s - go figure!
