NTSC on Bush Widescreen

Dolby Freak (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 26th December 2001, 00:05

I have a BUSH WS6676 Widescreen TV, which is fine but when i played a CD with a "jacket picture", which is in NTSC format, it display correctly, in colour and everything.
The problem is, is that you can see the lines of the TV screen very bad, its the same with the DVD player menu.
Is this because NTSC isnt as sharp as PAL or is there somthing wrong?.
(if it makes any diff, my dvd player is a Sony DVP-S336).

Cheers

Must be the TV. NTSC does have a lower resolution (about 540 compared to PAL`s 625) but that shouldn`t make scan-lines any more visible. I assume that PAL VHS playback is okay and that has a MUCH lower resolution than NTSC DVD`s, so it`s obviously the 60Hz nature of NTSC that`s causing the problem. It`s possible for TV manufacturers to cut-corners with things like this (especially Bush/Goodmans/Black Diamond etc), because just playing R1 discs in colour is enough to please some people.

Certain DVD players (Samsung/LG) have the ability to output in `quasi-Pal` (PAL 50) which allows NTSC material to be displayed at 50Hz (and would effectively solve your problem). Sony machines only support pure 3.58 NTSC though, so there isn`t an easy answer (unless buying a new TV is an option!).

Thanx for the help. i can`t afford a new tv, plus my player is region 2 anyway, so i`ll stick to PAL dvds for now.

The scan lines are always more visible with NTSC simply because there are less of them occupying the same space. One way round it (at a price) is to get a TV that doubles the vertical scan rate to 100Hz (PAL) or 120Hz (NTSC).

Gareth.
