Page 1 of I`m testdriving a Limit

DVD 8072 from Richer Sounds and am finding the sound quality pretty poor, the picture not too brilliant either. Has anyone else read any reviews of Limit products? I`m not too impressed. It`s going back. I`m tempted by the Toshiba 210 and the Sony 400 but I`m told there may be RCE problems with these products.

I had a Limit 8080se for a while. I experienced 2 problems with it

1 Playback of VCD`s was poor,the picture paused for a split second and then resumed ( bit like a layer change on a DVD ).

2 Audio distortion on playing some region1 discs ( Disney intro on toy story 2 )

When I mention these problems to Richer Sounds they offered to change the machine for another brand. The 8080 only had composite video output,the quality wasn`t too bad but the audio was not very good.I exchanged it for a LG4210 which is a far better machine and no RCE problems !.

I bought one from Richer Sounds following their advice having originally gone in for the one model you are after, the Toshiba 210.

I too tried to find a formal review and failed -always nice to know what the pro`s think a etc.

All I can say is the picture resolution looks crisp and I would go as far to say very good. The red colour is a bit weak but only needed colour turned up about 5 to 10% above TV setting to compensate. Pause is great as is zoom. There is no identifiable colour bleed. I play back through a RGB scart lead (a good one £20) to a Panasonic TX25MD3 (yes I am working on upgrade next) and believe the cable is important in this game as a Hi Fi buff! Speaking of which...

On the sound - it doesn`t have the attack of my Hi-Fi Marantz CD67, Kenwood KA3020SE amp, Mission 780e (if that means anything to you) but it is acceptable -to me. Anyway I was not expecting it (for £200) to compete at this level and it has a 15 metre connection going through 2 juntions to get to the amp on the other side of the room. In fact (he says listening to Dire Straits Love Over Gold CD now checking) I have heard a lot worse for a lot more.

One question I have on the sound comment I have on sound is the level needs really turning up when only playing through 2 channels through the Hi Fi.

If you get to compare the Limit 8072 directly with the Toshiba (which does not have all the fcailities by the way) I sure like to know before my 14 day trial runs out.

As to making the two players Toshiba 210 and Sony 400. They require hardware mods. The former a software burn and the latter a chip change. I know Richer Sounds do the all region Toshiba. The other player to compare is Pioneer DV-444 which is availible multiregion and gets rave reviews.

Went to Richer sounds having read reviews of the Toshiba 210, but was told that they don`t play RCE discs. Was told the Limit would , but didn`t like the look of it, was recommended & bought an Aiwa XD-DV480 which does everything I could ask! Also got a 2 year extension to my warranty for £20 with a promise of my £20 back at the end if I don`t have any repairs done! AND!! they will give me half the price I paid for my player if I decide to upgrade during the warranty period. Now that`s what I call a deal! It was only £179.95 too!

Please confirm what you mean by `didn`t like the look of it`. Do you mean the nice silver colour or the picture quaility or maybe both?

I have a Tosh 210 and everything about it is fine, picture quality, sound quality all good but I must admit it`s not the best looking player. It`s silver, It`s not bulky, It`s build quality is good but the only let down is the plastic silver front. The "on board" buttons don`t have that "plasticky feel" when you press them but the front panel does look a bit cheap. Mine was £179 region free from BE Direct they said it does not play RCE discs but as far as I can see it does ( The Shining R1) the only problem I have heard about RCE is that with some discs the Tosh will display a map with it`s correct region displayed and a warning all you have to do is put in a non RCE R1 disc wait till after the FBI copyright screen, re-insert your RCE disc and it will play.
