Which subwoofer?

Fry (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 27th January 2002, 02:32

I am getting a Kenwood THX 110w/channel reciever and the mission 72 A/V speaker package, which does not include a sub-woofer. The cost is already getting rather high for me so I do not want to spend all that much on a sub. The mission subs are all at least £200 pounds which I can not afford.
Please suggest I good sub that costs less than £200 that will make a deicent stand-in until I can save up enough to buy a better one.
Thanks

I was in a similar position to you - I got the M71 package, and have yet to buy a sub. I have been pleasantly suprised how the tiny M71s handle bass - obviously no trouser-flapping goes on, but they`re quite good.
If I were you, I`d consider living without a sub for a while and then putting a decent wedge towards one - cheap subs tend to sound wooly and will detract from the sound.
Alternatively, at the higher range of your limit, the Paradigm PDR10 (£150, Richer Sounds) gets well reviewed by owners - this may be worth auditioning - it may do you. There is also another one, the PS1000 at £199. You can get a KEF sub for around £150, too. You may find one of these will fit the bill. Anything below this sort of price will not do justice to the rest of your system, and it seems a waste to buy something you know you`re going to sell at a loss 6 months down the line.

However, before you jump in and get a sub, have you already got yourself some decent speaker cable and some stands for the M72s? I would make sure you have that right before starting on the sub. Here`s a link to a speaker stand special offer http://www.beyondhifi.net/default.asp?productid=529.

HTH!
