The cheapest way is to get a second-hand Samsung 709 (or similar), typically for around £80 or less. This player outputs "NTSC" DVDs as PAL-50Hz, with its in-built digital conversion. The results you get are generally quite good.

The best way is to buy a Thomson VCR which can record in NTSC; expect to pay around £100-£150 for a Nicam model. This will directly record the output from your Sony player. Note that the resulting recordings will be NTSC rather than PAL (i.e. there`s no conversion involved at all), so you need a VCR with "NTSC Playback" feature in order to play them back.

Standalone digital standards converters are not very cost effective (the cheapest is about £200!) and are unlikely to give as good results as either of the above options. I think you should only consider a converter if you want PAL VHS copies from an analogue NTSC source, e.g. VHS or laserdisc.
