Some Mico questions......

shenbop2001 (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 21st March 2002, 17:19

Hey,
Few questions about the Mico classica 20 from Sainsbury`s:
Does it have on board DTS and 5.1 decoders?
How loud is it during playback?
Does it have 5.1 outputs?
Does it do NTSC to PAL 50 conversion? ( because my tv is not multistandard, its pal 50hz)

Hope someone has the answers!
Thanks a lot,

Steve

It is compatable with 5.1 & DTS but does not have decoder/outputs - you`ll need a seperate compatable amp.

It plays back at normal volume in relation to a sky system.

It does not appear to output PAL 50 from a NTSC disk, but if your TV has a scart it probably will cope with PAL 60 even though its not multi-standard - can`t record PAL 60 though!

Nice player for the money, the other messages on the subject indicate its Panasonic based and looks good value, hope this helps.

Thanks a lot, i was tempted by the multi region and macro off features but I am planning to get a set of 5.1 speakers ans subwoofer soon so i really need those outputs.
What i meant was how loud is the machine during playback of a disc, i.e can you constantly hear the disc spinning, sorry i didnt make myself clearer.
Thanks again,

Steve

Shenbop2001....If ypu have`nt bought the speakers etc, I would strongly suggest you bought a proper (& I`ve seen them for just over £100-00) amp & seperate speakers. If you buy a DVD just because of the outputs you will probably regret not getting a player that can handle everything properly in the future.

I rang 4 Sainsbury supermarkets before i found one that sells the mico clasica 20. Problem is that there is a shortage of the machine and it would be a month before they would have anymore in stock.
The only other place you can get a mico from is www.multizonedvd.co.uk
but it is the mico celo 80 and it costs £150. It has more features.

same problem here.

Only the big Sainsbury `hypermarkets` hold it. I`ve been travelling around and calling the nearest (I`m North London/Herts) but they are swamped with `back orders` - they don`t even get to the shelves when they do come in. My name`s on one of those lists, but no calls. In fact `customer services` in one branch are holding them there instead for pick-up rather than the electrical department! hmm... new buzzword: `mico` ?

So the crux is this: if all the mico clasica`s have gone, and maybe unlikely to get one now, is it worth getting the mail order-only mico celo 80 instead for the extra £50? assuming the main difference is DTS on-board decoding, karaoke/time-stretching larks it can do with dvd soundtracks and audio cd`s, are there any internal other differences? is it any better or any worse as it`s an older model?

Is the Clasica REALLY a better picture than the Toshiba 210 or Pioneer 444, surely not...

I`m only after one `cause of easy Macro disable, silver, and cheap.

I`m off to buy some stock in Mico Holdings ;)

I haven`t bought the speakers etc yet so i may get this player but what I don`t understand is why my Toshiba SD110 has 5.1 outputs on the back when it doesn`t have a 5.1 decoder, and therefore what is the point in them??? this leads me on to how would i connect the Mico to a 5.1 speaker+sub set up without outputs from the player. i`m a little baffled as to exactly what the 5.1 outputs do??i asumed they would connect to all the speakers, or the sub and therefore get sound to them, but how is this possible with no outputs(e.g on the Mico)
don`t know if i`m making a lot of sense or not. hope i am!
